Weight Loss And Nutrition Myths – What You Need To Know! Part 1

By Simon Edwards MYTH: Fad diets work for permanent weight loss. FACT: Fad diets are not the best way to lose weight and keep it off. Fad diets often promise quick weight loss or tell you to cut certain foods out of your diet. You may lose weight at first on one of these diets. But diets that strictly limit calories or food choices are hard to follow. Most people quickly get tired of them and regain any lost weight. Fad diets may be unhealthy because they may not provide all of the nutrients your body needs. Also, losing weight at a very rapid rate (more than 3 pounds a week after the first couple weeks) may increase your risk for developing gallstones (clusters of solid material in the gallbladder that can be painful). Diets that provide less than 800 calories per day also could result in heart rhythm abnormalities, which can be fatal. TIP: Research suggests that losing to 2 pounds a week by making healthy food choices, eating moderate portions, and building physical activity into your daily life is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. By adopting healthy eating and physical activity habits, you may also lower your risk for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. ========================================================== MYTH: High-protein/low-carbohydrate diets are a healthy way to lose weight. ========================================================== FACT: The long-term health effects of a high-protein/low-carbohydrate diet are unknown. But getting most of your daily calories from high-protein foods like meat, eggs, and cheese is not a balanced eating plan. You may be eating too much fat and cholesterol, which may raise heart disease risk. You may be eating too few fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which may lead to constipation due to lack of dietary fiber. Following a high-protein/low-carbohydrate diet may also make you feel nauseous, tired, and weak. Eating fewer than 130 grams of carbohydrate a day can lead to the buildup of ketones (partially broken-down fats) in your blood. A buildup of ketones in your blood (called ketosis) can cause your body to produce high levels of uric acid, which is a risk factor for gout (a painful swelling of the joints) and kidney stones. Ketosis may be especially risky for pregnant women and people with diabetes or kidney disease. TIP: High-protein/low-carbohydrate diets are often low in calories because food choices are strictly limited, so they may cause short-term weight loss. But a reduced-calorie eating plan that includes recommended amounts of carbohydrate, protein, and fat will also allow you to lose weight. By following a balanced eating plan, you will not have to stop eating whole classes of foods, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetablesand miss the key nutrients they contain. You may also find it easier to stick with a diet or eating plan that includes a greater variety of foods. ============================================================ MYTH: Starches are fattening and should be limited when trying to lose weight. ============================================================ FACT: Many foods high in starch, like bread, rice, pasta, cereals, beans, fruits, and some vegetables (like potatoes and yams) are low in fat and calories. They become high in fat and calories when eaten in large portion sizes or when covered with high-fat toppings like butter, sour cream, or mayonnaise. Foods high in starch (also called complex carbohydrates) are an important source of energy for your body. TIP: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating 6 to 11 servings a day, depending on your calorie needs, from the bread, cereal, rice, and pasta groupeven when trying to lose weight. Pay attention to your serving sizesone serving is equal to 1 slice of bread, 1 ounce of ready-to-eat cereal, or cup of pasta, rice, or cooked cereal. Try to avoid high-fat toppings and choose whole grains, like whole wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal, and bran cereal. Choose other starchy foods that are high in dietary fiber too, like beans, peas, and vegetables. ================================================================= MYTH: Certain foods, like grapefruit & celery, can burn fat and make you lose weight. ================================================================= FACT: No foods can burn fat. Some foods with caffeine may speed up your metabolism (the way your body uses energy, or calories) for a short time, but they do not cause weight loss. TIP: The best way to lose weight is to cut back on the number of calories you eat and be more physically active. ==================================================== MYTH: Natural or herbal weight-loss products are safe and effective. ==================================================== FACT: A weight-loss product that claims to be “natural” or “herbal” is not necessarily safe. These products are not usually scientifically tested to prove that they are safe or that they work. For example, herbal products containing ephedra (now banned by the U.S. Government) have caused serious health problems and even death. Newer products that claim to be ephedra-free are not necessarily danger-free, because they may contain ingredients similar to ephedra. TIP: Talk with your health care provider before using any weight-loss product. Some natural or herbal weight-loss products can be harmful. How To Fertilize Your Vegetable Garden

By Dave Truman Fertilizer is an important part of a successful garden, but using the wrong one or using the right one the wrong way can cause problems. Overuse is one of the most common problems, especially in the case of slow-release fertilizers. Slow release fertilizers are designed to release their nutrients over a period of time and if you apply them too often, you may wind up overlapping the new with the old that has not fully released yet. Always make sure you read the directions for the fertilizers you’re using in your garden. In most cases, they will say how often they should be applied. There are 3 components to fertilizer: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They’re rated by the amount of each of these ingredients. They will have a number, such as 20-20-20, which indicates how much of each is included. The first number is the nitrogen content, the second is the phosphorus and the third is the potassium. Each of the three components of fertilizer promotes different types of growth. Nitrogen promotes leaf and stem growth, phosphorus helps with fruits and strong root systems and potassium helps to strengthen the plants. Initially, a complete fertilizer will help to get your plants started properly. After growth has begun, be careful not to over-fertilize with nitrogen, which can make the plant put too much energy into growing leaves and stems, making the fruit growth suffer in turn. There are many types of fertilizer available, some chemical based and others organic. Consider where you will be using them when choosing which type to use. If you’re growing vegetables that you will be eating, you might want to think twice before using chemical fertilizers – after all, would you want to put that stuff in your body? You Can Grow Your Own Herb Garden – Part 2

By Melinda Robinson Setting it all up If you have chosen an outdoor garden, keep it small at first. 4′ x 4′ is a good size for a novice herb gardener, and will enable you to grow about 8-9 different herbs. Select a sunny spot which is easily accessible with a hose or sprinkler. Most herbs need lots of sunlight to thrive. Those which may require less light can be strategically placed so that shade from taller plants or nearby trees falls on them, or you can set up a separate garden for them in a shady area. Work the soil in your chosen area. Dig up and discard any large rocks, break up solid chunks of dirt, take patches of grass to other parts of your yard that are bare and can use the help. You can, in some cases, plant directly in your soil but enriched soil really is best for gardening. I prefer to make a raised bed, then fill with a mixture of approximately 60% topsoil and 40% peat. To make a raised bed, construct a box in the spot where it is to stand. One way to do this uses landscaping timbers along with large screws and is very easy. Make the box at least two timbers high. Screw landscape timbers together with 3″ coarse-thread deck screws. Put the timbers together by first drilling a 3/8″ hole halfway through the timbers themselves. Otherwise, the screw will not go through the landscape timber. CAVEAT: In some areas of the United States, the available landscape timbers may be infested with Formosan termites. DO NOT use these. Alternatives include left-over deck material or 2×4s. Fill in the box with the topsoil and peat. You can figure out how many bags of topsoil you need either by judging with your eyes or figuring out how many cubic feet are in the area for your garden and then buying the corresponding cubic feet of soil. Peat generally comes in compressed blocks; you will probably need approximately 1.65 cubic ft. per 4′ x 4′ area. For an indoor garden, you can use all kinds of pots and containers, as long as they retain moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. Terra cotta pots are probably not a good idea because they tend to absorb water instead of allowing it to stay in the soil. Fill containers with a topsoil and peat mix, just like the outdoor garden. You might even try an outdoor container garden. This is an excellent option especially if you live in an apartment, have limited outdoor space or want to start very small. Herbs can be grown individually or you can get a very large pot and combine herbs. If you want to combine herbs you can try themed pots. How about a Kitchen Garden with basil, dill, savory, mint and chives? Have fun making your own combinations based on your own preferences and needs. The Planting Seeds or established plants – which should you choose? In the case of the novice herb gardener, I suggest plants. You can find these at reliable nurseries in your area and sometimes in catalogs. Seeds can be unreliable, often not sprouting at all and therefore frustrating to the gardener who is excited about seeing life spring into being. When using seeds, be aware that seedlings often need to be thinned — this means removing those that are too close together and either replanting them or throwing them out. Seedlings are very delicate and don’t always live when replanted, another frustration for the budding herb gardener. Later on, after your herb garden has become established and you are more confident, you can use seeds. By that time, you will have become accustomed to working with the plants and will have a “feel” for how to treat them. Some herbs come in peat pots which can be directly transferred to the ground; however, I have never had much luck with these and recommend taking the plant out of these types of containers. (I understand there are some newer plantable pots from Bonnie Plant Farm (http://www.bonnieplants.com/), but I havent tried them yet.) When removing herbs from their pots, gently squeeze all around the container to loosen the dirt. Tear away the pot or ease the plant out if the pot is unbreakable. Very gently loosen the dirt around the roots by scrunching it with your fingers and tapping it lightly against your hand. Make a hole in the soil about the size of the root ball and place the herb plant into this hole. Hold the plant with one hand while scooping earth around it with the other. Firmly but gently pack the dirt around the plant. Don’t pack the dirt too tightly as plants need to “breathe”, something they can’t do if the soil is too tight around their roots. Most plants come with plastic markers that tell you what kind of plant it is, the plant’s light and water requirements, and sometimes how much room the plant needs to grow. For a basic 4′ x 4′ starter garden, place three plants equidistant from each other at each side, leaving a good 4 inches from the sides of the box. This will leave enough room for one or possibly two plants in the middle. Don’t throw away those plastic markers that identify the plants. Instead, put them into the ground near the plant itself so that you always know which plant is which. After you have all the herbs in the ground, water the area gently yet thoroughly. When watering your herb garden, it is best to soak the soil deeply. Allow the water to run down deep into the Earth, wetting the roots of the plants completely. Deep watering like this encourages strong, stable root systems. If you give your herb garden a cursory watering, only wetting the top layer of soil, the roots of your plants may close to the surface, become weak and die. The Video Club: The Culture of Exchanging Videos through Phone

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Philip_Nicosia]Philip Nicosia With millions and millions of mobile phone users around the world, theres no wonder that cellular phone manufacturers have continuously modified this little gadget from a simple communication device, to an essential multi-purpose tool. It now functions as a still camera, mp3 player, radio, organizer, clock, word processor, web browser, game console, networking device, and recently, as video camera. The practise of exchanging videos through mobile phone brings a whole new meaning to show and tell. Video capable phones have become a delightful and convenient conversation starter and aid. For instance, the technology makes it easier to introduce friends to other friends, even when theyre not physically present, by sharing the video you took of him or her on your mobile. In a different scenario, you can now instantly prove your claim of being able to sky dive, bungee-jump, and kite-surf, to a friend you have not seen in a while, by showing him or her the videos on your phone. Just imagine the wonders that having this capability in your phone would do to your social life; having the latest funny, exciting, and interesting clips can lead you right to the in crowd. Those who find a clip interesting enough, seeing it on your mobile phone, will want to have a copy of it just to show it to other people, or simply to be able to view it again. This culture of sharing has the capacity to keep the conversation going, from one group of friends to the next. Sharing videos through phone also provides instant entertainment and a convenient way to pass the time. Regularly receiving videos from friends and acquaintances can make your phone the ultimate mobile entertainment gadget, as it holds clips that you can view at any convenient time. When you have a mobile phone thats equipped with a video camera, its easy to capture footage that you would not have been able to catch otherwise. If your friends spontaneously sent you on a dare to try on an outrageous costume in the vintage shop and then take a tour of the store, you probably wouldnt have the chance to get your home video camera to tape it. With your video enabled phone, you can record it and instantly send it out to a friend who needs cheering up. Going on a Caribbean cruise? You can bring out that video camera just in time to capture footage of the dolphins diving in and out of the water. Aside from creating potential works of art and documenting rare events in your everyday life, you can also use the video camera to send your love to someone who is far away, and it will have a more personal touch as the receiver can see your image as you deliver the message. Holistic Health and Healing: A Common Sense Approach – Healing Happens Naturally

By Michael McCright It all starts with PREVENTION! All too often, we as individuals come to believe that illness, disease, sickness and injury just happen to us and that some outside source forces itself upon us. Its at that time that we decide that we must do something special to fight for our health. Sometimes it appears that whatever has happened will continue to plague us forever and perhaps it may. It all depends on how far down the disease continuum we have allowed ourselves to progress. Whoever said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure was absolutely correct and that age old axiom if Id known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself also applies. The state that our bodies are in will determine whether we will be able to be over that cold in 4 hours, 4 days or 4 weeks. It will determine how fast a broken bone will mend. A broken bone will normally mend itself in a couple of months, with most of the pain and discomfort gone within the first month. The state that our bodies are in will determine the length of recovery time after a surgery or hospital stay. Difficulties in the healing process develop when the body does not have the elements that it needs to complete the task at hand. Another way of saying it is that a person has allowed the body to fall into a state of lack. Lacking an essential vitamin, mineral, amino acid, oxygen molecule, etc. will make the body rob from Peter to pay Paul. It will take something from another part of the body that it considers less important (at the moment) and use it to fulfill critical needs. A good example is when the blood becomes too acidic and needs some calcium to neutralize the acid and get back to an alkaline state. If we have plenty of calcium available in the body, great! However, if we dont, then the body will take it from the bones (the bones make a great storage place for calcium). This is known as osteoporosis and it makes sense that it could be a factor in osteoarthritis. How and why did it happen? The answer is simple, we did not keep the body in a balanced state by providing it with the building blocks it needed for continued health. Another sad fact that becomes apparent is that we probably werent even aware that the event happened. Lets say I was going to make an outstanding chocolate cake and the recipe required the following ingredients: 2 cups white sugar 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda1 teaspoon salt2 eggs1 cup milk1/2 cup vegetable oil2 teaspoons vanilla extract1 cup boiling water But lets say I only had 1 cup of brown sugar, cup of chocolate chips and teaspoon of vanilla, plus all of the other ingredients. How good is my chocolate cake going to be? It might look OK, but chances are the person eating it is going to be surprised at the taste. You cant bake a cake or run the body without providing everything thats needed. By the same token, it is wise not to add ingredients for either the cake or the body that are not required. I dont think if I added two ounces of Oregano that it would help the cake taste any better. I still wonder why people feel a need to put tar, carcinogens, and nicotine (a poison) into the body thinking that in some way it helps them. The body is the most amazing chemical factory ever devised. The body produces energy, distributes the fuel required for functioning, neutralizes toxins and removes them from the body so that further contamination cannot take place. The sad part is that most people take all of this for granted. They seem to care less about the foods they eat, the liquids they drink and the junk they use to feed the body. They are clueless about how difficult it is for the heart to do its job every day. If your resting heart rate is 80 beats per minute, take that times 60 minutes in a hour, and that times 24 hours in a day and you have your heart beating 115,200 times every day! Through activity and exercise you can strengthen the heart and its resting rate will drop. Lets say you lower your resting heart rate to 72 beats per minute. Using the above calculations, your heart would only have to beat 103,680 times per day saving you 11,520 beats. I dont know how to calculate the energy savings of those 11 thousand beats but your body could definitely use that energy somewhere else — perhaps in the immune system to fight off that cold we talked about. Another system of the body that gets slammed quite regularly is the pancreas, which is the organ responsible for producing insulin. Insulin keeps the blood sugar levels in the blood stream within certain limits. A can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar in it and a can of Pepsi has 41 grams of sugar in it. If we understand that 4 grams equals one teaspoon, or that each soda has around 10 teaspoons of sugar, then we can understand the headline: One Soda a Day Increases Diabetes Risk 85 Percent. Most people are unaware that diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the US. We create that situation for ourselves and by ourselves. If a wart were to grow out of our big toe one quarter of an inch for every teaspoon of sugar we consumed, we would probably stop after drinking about one half a can. But because we experience no outward side effects we continue to do what we have always done. We talked about activity and exercise being able to help the heart, but that is not the only benefit. As we stress the cells of the body by working them, they become more efficient at producing energy. They move oxygen and nutrients into the cells with more ease and rid the cells of toxic waste. Of course, as our cellular efficiency becomes greater, our ability to ward off disease and sickness becomes greater. We sleep better at night, and have more serenity and less stress in our lives during the day. My hope is that while reading this article, some little ah-ha popped out — that something made sense on a gut (action level) and not just on a mental (agreement) level. The true key to living a long full disease-free life is prevention. I pray that you will do those things that will allow you to move into a healthy state of being. Remember, if you want to be healthy, do what other healthy people do. Michael McCright is a Holistic Health Practitioner, educator, coach, and motivational speaker. Cash Advance Payday Loans: Yes The Rates Are Higher!

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Greg_Ford]Greg Ford Typically Cash Advance Payday Loans have no credit checks, and a very minimal amount of paper work. They are mainly concerned that you are, whom you say, you are. And, that you have the income, and the ability, to pay back the loan. And, that you have a checking account. Cash advance loans are designed for emergency situations! When you are short on cash and need money fast! Family emergencies, unexpected car repairs, overdrafts, telephone reconnection, unexpected bill, etc. The Cash Advance Payday Loan industry is the subject of much criticism. Most of it coming from members of the regular established lending industry, banks and credit unions. This is because of the interest rates and fees involved with these short-term payday loans. Typically if you receive a $100 Cash Advance 7 to 14 days later you will be required to pay back about $125. That may not sound so bad, especially if you really needed that $100 at the time, and know you can easily pay it back plus the extra $25 when you get paid from your job. But if compared to maybe a 6% interest rate from a bank, or even a high 29% if taking a cash advance from a credit card… using the same repayment period, this Payday Loan would equate to somewhere near 500% So consider If you are strictly comparing interest rates to interest rates, there is no question that the A.P.R. on payday loans are outrageous! But also consider this will a bank or credit union loan you a quick $100 when you really need it? How about that same day, or within 24 hours? If you have some credit issues will a bank or credit union even talk to you at all? Even if you have A1 credit, and are in a situation where you needed a little quick extra cash it is very unlikely you can walk into any bank and get it within 24 hours. The one exception would be if you already had a pre-establish line of credit with your own bank. The bottom line is that Cash Advance Payday Loans exist for a reason. They supply a definite need, and there is a definite demand. Most of their customers are not the ones who banks, and credit, union are very anxious to lend money too. And with Online Cash Advance services you never have to leave your home. Cash Advance companies loan money to people with no credit checks, and very little documentation! That, by anybody’s definition, is considered a high risk loan. Of course the interest rate is going to be much higher. If you are thinking about using these services the important thing to consider is: * What is it Going to Cost You to Get the Money? * What is it Going To Cost You, If You Dont Get The Money? * Do You Really Need that Money Now? * Can You Make It To Payday Without It? Getting a Cash Advance, in itself, is not a bad thing! However, if you choose to accept a payday cash advance be fully aware of what you are doing. Before you accept that money advance make sure you know: * The Exact Total Amount That Must be Repaid. * What Date That Payment is Due. * Be Certain That You Will Have the Money to Make That Payment. Make sure, when you get a payday loan that you are using it for the shortest amount of time possible and get the lowest cash amount you can get by with. This will help you keep your fees to a minimum. There is never any cost, or obligation, to simply apply online with a Cash Advance company. When you are approved, you are still under no obligation to accept the loan. At Least 40 Household Products Can Poison Your Child: Lock ‘Em Up!

By Joe Hickman Every few seconds U.S. poison centers receive a call about someone being exposed to a poison. Forty percent of those cases involve a child under three years old. According to the National Safety Council, more than 50 percent of over a million poisoning incidents each year involve children under six years of age. The Environmental Protection Agency urges everyone to lock up pesticides and other household chemicals in a high cabinet out of the reach of children. In a childhood poison prevention program, EPA and the American Association of Poison Control Centers send the simple message “Lock It Up” to adults everywhere. The campaign also publicizes the national toll-free poison center phone number 1-800-222-1222 for immediate help if a child may have been poisoned. So many poisons! Over 75 percent of poisoned children swallow the toxic substance or item involved, and in most poisonings, the substance is something found around almost every home: prescription drugs, non-prescription pain killers, vitamins, cosmetics, and personal care and cleaning products. A large portion of poisonings also involve house plants, tobacco products and alcohol. Check your home for toxic products or items a child can reach: – Bathroom: medicines, toilet cleaners, antibacterial cleaners, air fresheners, drain cleaners, mold and mildew remover, and some cosmetics. – Kitchen: glass cleaner, antibacterial cleaner, dishwashing detergent, all-purpose cleaner, insect sprays, oven cleaner, and ant or roach baits. – Living Room: flea collars, rug or carpet cleaners, furniture polish, cigarette or cigar butts in ash trays, and alcoholic beverages. – Bedroom: total release insect foggers, air fresheners, and moth balls. – Laundry Room: all-purpose cleaner, inspect sprays, chlorine bleach, woodstains and finishes, and laundry detergents. – Garage: motor oil, windshield washer fluid, oil-based and latex paints, auto batteries, antifreeze, spot-on pesticides to control fleas and ticks on pets. – Back Yard: weed killers, pool chemicals including algicides and chlorine, baits for rodent control, insect repellents, and some new bug zappers. Make Your Home Safer The National Poison Prevention Week Council recommends: – Keep all household chemical products and medicines out of reach and out of sight of youngsters, preferably locked up when not in use. Medicines and household chemicals on kitchen counters or bathroom surfaces are very accessible to young hands. Make sure any medicines visitors may bring into your home are kept safely away from children. – When using toxic products, never let them out of your sight, even if you must take them along when answering the telephone or the doorbell. Most poisonings occur when the product is in use. – Store all medicines separately from household products, and store all household chemical products away from food. – Keep products in their original containers with the original label intact. Read the label before using. – Always leave the light on when giving or taking medicines. – Avoid taking medicines in front of children, since youngsters tend to imitate grown-ups. Never call medicine “candy.” The Centers for Disease Control add: – Post the poison control number 1-800-222-1222 on or near every home telephone. – Know the names of the plants in your house and yard. Fattest Country in the World: Are We There Yet?

By Victor Holtreman At an estimated 64.5% of the U.S. population being considered obese or overweight, we must have that dubious title. This information comes from the Trust for Americans’ Health, an independent advocacy group. They say that the nation has been let down by ineffective anti-obesity policies, but I’m not sure what they expect. Personal responsibility (and yes, sloth) is a factor, but I can’t help but point to my prior article about Burger King and how many calories they pack into a food (and I use the term loosely) item. I mean when a fast food chain sells a kids meal that has close to 700 calories… come on now! Even I, cynical bugger that I am wouldn’t expect that many calories in a kid’s meal at a fast food joint. This is going to be ugly folks… childhood obesity is out of hand and we have an aging population that’s WAY overweight. I’m not bright enough to predict the long term consequences but I guarantee that they will not be good and we’re going to wake up one day to a crisis. I’m talking diabetes, cancer and heart disease on a massive scale. It may be 10 years away or it may be 20… but it’s coming, sure enough.
